what did the idea of "no taxation without representation" mean to the colonists? it meant that they had no say in what they were taxed on
were the patriots opposed to all taxes? why or why not? no, they just wanted a say in what they were taxed on. They understood the need for taxes, just not excessive/unnecessary ones
who is John Locke? why is he important to the founding fathers? -english philosopher and physician -came up with theory of government and idea of natural rights - teaching helped fathers come up with values they wanted U.S. to have
what is republicanism? how did it complement the biblical notion of the nature of man? the idea that the government should protect the peoples liberties, but is often the greatest threat to liberty. They knew that people are sinful and that abuse of power was inevitable
what was the importance of Thomas Paine's Common Sense? turning point in shifting America's discussion from resistance to independence
who was the lead author of the Declaration of Independence? Thomas Jefferson
where does the Declaration state our rights come from? God
Although slavery was not referenced in the Declaration, the phrase "all men are created equal" is a foundational principle of America...How do we reconcile the fact that Jefferson(a slave owner) said these words? EXPLAIN Just because someone is hypocritical doesn't mean that what they say is any less true or important. Jefferson wrongly owning slaves doesn't negate the fact that all men are created equal.
what were the Articles of Confederation? first national constitution
what powers did the AoC give the national government? -dealing with foreign affairs -borrow money -regulate value of currency -make war and peace -raise army -settle dispute within States
what were the major weaknesses of the AoC? -states saw themselves as independent - couldn't enforce laws -congress couldn't tax anyone -states didn't consider the national debt to be their problem -amendments could only be changed with unanimous consent
what was Shay's Rebellion? Massachusetts, 1786: a group of armed farmers closed several courts and advanced onto a federal arsenal b/c heavy taxes and a bad harvest had led to their property being siezed because of debt
what branch is Article I? why is this the first branch covered in the Constitution? legislative, represents the people

what does the United States guarantee to the States? -Republican form of gov. -protection from invasion
why are the checks and balances outlined in the Constitution so important? -thwarts any of the branches from growing too big -creates balance of power
