what are inherent powers? what are two examples of inherent powers? -assumed to exist 1) control borders of the state 2) expand territory of state
what are standing committees? permanent, bills are referred to for consideration, continue from one congress to the next
what are joint committees? include both houses of congress, conducts studies/perform housekeeping taskes
what are conference committees? special joint committees to reconcile differences in bills
what are select committees? temporary, appointed for specific purposes(investigations) -9/11, origin of covid
what is the house rules committee? "traffic cop of the house" -directs flow of major legislation -can move bills ahead quickly, hold them back, or kill them
what is the Speaker of the House? who is the current speaker? -presiding officer and most powerful leader -Kevin McCarthy
what is the Majority Leader of the House? Who is the current majority leader? -helps plan the party's legislative program -steer important bills through house -Steve Scalise
what is the job of a Whip in Congress? -to make sure that the party members vote of bills, vote how the party wants, and that party members are present to vote
what is a quorum? the minimum # of members needed for official legislative action
what is a filibuster? how many votes are needed to end a filibuster? -any # of actions taken to prevent a bill from coming to a final vote; usually debates -60
what is cloture? it can end filibuster if 60 votes
who has the record for the longest filibuster in history? Strom Thurmond
how many seats are in the HOR? 435
how many seats are in the Senate? 100
what is the Majority Leader of the Senate? who is the current majority leader? -steers party's bills thru Senate, gets support for key bills - Chuck Schumer
how many states have only one congressional district? 6: Dakotas, Alaska, Vermont, Wyoming, Delaware
