Production This is when you actually shoot the video you've been planning
Music Video Pre-Production 1. Brainstorming 2. Outline 3. Script 4. Storyboard
Brainstorming Developing a concept, listening to the song.
Outline 2 or 3 paragraphs that briefly describe the music video concept.
Script 2 or 3 pages that describe in great detail the music video concept.
Storyboard Illustrations, drawings, or sketches that depict key scenes from the script.
Producer Finds the content to pitch to turn into a production. Work is driven by them most of the time. They also hire key actors and handle the business components of filmmaking.
Production Concept Shooting to edit later.
Director They have the creative vision for the production. They work with actors and motivate them to perform a role a certain way.
Production Manager Right hand to the producer, troubleshooting with them if necessary. They can hire additional (not key) people needed to make the production work (i.e. for catering).
Assistant Director Right hand to the director, troubleshooting with them if necessary. They help make the vision a reality.
DOP Head of the camera team, has the technical skills to bring the director's vision into reality.
Gaffer They are responsible for lighting, from pick up, to set up, etc. They also run the power. There would be about 6 on a big production and 3 would be certified electricians.
Executive Producer They deal with the funding and the budget. Generally they work for a major studio or streaming service. They channel the funding to the producer.
Three Point Lighting System - key light - fill light - backlight
Key Light Main focussing light, used to illuminate the subject.
Fill Light Used to fill in around the subject area, also "soft light" or "floodlight."
Back Light Combination of key and fill light, used especially in close up shots. Illuminates the actor from the back.
Creative Lighting - imitating reality - setting the mood - defining form, texture & depth - focusing attention on a single subject
Zoom Lens Variable focal length lens.
Aperture A hole of opening in the lens through which light travels to the image sensor.
F-Stop Controls the aperture; aperture size is measured in f-stops.
Camera Perspective - reportorial - subjective - objective
Subjective The camera is the subject.
Reportorial The subject addresses the camera.
Objective The camera is observing the subjects & the subjects pretend the camera isn't there.
Field of View The area that a camera can capture in a single frame. It can be wider or narrower. It can be affected by the focal length of the lens, size of imaging sensor, size of camera.
Depth of Field The area of the shot that's in focus. Can be affected by the type of lens and the amount of light.
Panning Left/right camera movement.
Tilting Up/down camera movement.
Timing of Transitions cutting: - on dialogue/singer - on reaction/audience - on action - on beat - on movement
Methods of Transitions - cut - dissolve - fade - wipe - defocus
Low Resolution Edit Low cost editing process that's highly creative and time intensive. This is the edit used for approval. The final product is the edit decision list (EDL).
Edit Decision List The final product of the low resolution edit. It's comprised of: - order of shots selected - method of transition - length of shot
S.M.P.T.E. Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers. It's used to find material and synchronize the material audio to video.
Film Editor They are the technical co-coordinator of the post-production phase. They - select the shots used - assemble them - make necessary adjustments in relation of shots to one another - fix the length of each individual shot.
High Resolution Edit An expensive editing process done in a short time frame using the EDL. The final product is a mastering of a broadcast quality program delivered to a broadcaster.
Assembly Edit Step one of editing. One complete take of the singer singing the entire song, MS/CU shot, which gives a timeline end to end. This becomes your first edit & visual reference.
Insert Edit Step two of editing. Editing over step one with selected shots, using the script as a guide. The result may not have a single shot of the initial edit left.
Foley Artist Enhances and replaces specific sound effects to the edited picture.
Camera Mount Stabilizes the camera.
Controlled Beam Light Spotlight; has a lens you can focus in, aim and point. Can be used as a key light.
