Felt Side | top side of paper sheet as it is formed on wire of wet end of paper machine which later comes in contact with felts during subsequent drying phases |
Formation | the manner in which paper fibers are mixed in a sheet of paper. Physical distribution and orientation of fibers and other solid constituents in the structure of a sheet of paper that affects its appearance and other physical properties |
Mould | wooden frame which holds a screen of parallel or woven brass wires which is dipped into the pulp in the vat to pick up the pulp for a single sheet of paper and through which water drains away in the formation of a sheet of handmade paper |
Pigment | an insoluble mineral or organic powder used as a dye to color paper and as an additive to impart specific properties, such as bulk, porosity and opacity to the sheet |
Pulp | fibrous material produced by mechanically or chemically reducing plants into their component parts from which pulp, paper and paperboard sheets are formed after proper slushing treatment |
Size | Substance such as rosin, gelatins, glues, starch or waxes added to paper stock furnish or to the surface of a sheet in order to give water resistant properties and reduce absorbant rate |
Slurry | liquid mixture consisting of suspended fibers, fillers, coating pigments and other solid material in water or adhesive, used in the papermaking process |
Tear Strength | resistance of a paper sheet to tearing, usually measured by the force required to tear a strip under standardized conditions |
Text Paper | good quality, laid or woven book paper with a medium vellum-like finish |
