What is government? Made up of the formal institutions & processes through which decisions are made for a group of people.
What is the definition of a state? A political unit with power to make & enforce laws over a group of people living within a clearly defined territory.
What are the 4 characteristics of a state? Population Territory Government Sovereignty (AL does not have this)
What are the 5 primary functions of government? Ensure National Security (military) Maintain Order(peace is kept) Resolve Conflict Provide Services (Roads, Bridges) Provide for the Public Good (Medicare, Medicaid)
What are the 4 theories of how governments are created? Divine Right, Evolution, Social Contract, Force
What is the theory that states are founded by God or the gods, the ruler possesses a “divine right” to rule. SOURCE of power: God Divine Right
What is the theory that states form gradually over time, growing from family and extended kinship groups .SOURCE of power: time and families Evolution
What is the theory that states form when people reach a “contract” to surrender some power to a common authority in return for security SOURCE of power: contract and people Social Contract
What is the theory that states form when an individual or group uses force to make enough people submit to the central authority. SOURCE of power: strength and power Force
What are the 8 different forms of government? Monarchy, Constitutional Monarchy, Dictatorship, Totalitarian Regimes, Oligarchy/Aristocracy, Theocracy, Direct Democracy, Republic/Representative Democracy
What is the difference between unitary and federal systems of government? With unitary, all the powers of government are placed in the central government whereas federal system, the powers of government are divided between national, state, etc.
What is unitary system of government? One government, all the power is in one place., the central government. Alabama’s is in Montgomery, America. Regional governments carry out decisions made by the central government.
What is federal system of government? Divides power over people and territory between a national government and smaller, regional levels of government. All levels have the power to make their own laws, elect officials, and create agencies.
Which form of government is ruled by a monarch, they have unlimited power? Monarchy
Which form of government has other forms of government within the monarchy, power is limited? Constitutional Monarchy
Which form of government has one person making all the decisions? Dictatorship
Which form of government the dictator has all authority, no limits on power? Totalitarian Regimes
Which form of government a small group of people make decisions for government? Oligarchy/ Aristocracy
Which form of government has religious beliefs, power is unlimited? Theocracy
Which form of government is by the people, citizens come together to discuss and pass laws Direct Democracy
Which form of government is by the people, citizens elect representatives to make decisions for them Republic/ Representative Democracy
