American Political Culture

TermDefinition
Political Culture A patterned and sustained way of thinking about how political and economic life ought to be carried out.
Liberty Personal freedom.
Equality All people have equal opportunities and are treated equally.
Civic Duty A belief that one has an obligation to participate in civic and political affairs.
Civic Organizations A group that works together to help others in the community.
Individual Responsibility The American view that people are mostly responsible for their own actions and well-being.
un-American A political party that opposes the majority party but within the context of legal rules.
Equality of Opportunity The belief that each person should have an equal chance at success and that no person should be limited by circumstances outside of her control.
Equality of Results The belief that no matter what people do, everyone should be given the same economic and lifestyle conditions.
Individualism A social and political philosophy that promotes individual well-being over the well-being of society as a whole.
Values A person's principles or standards of behavior; one's judgment of what is important in life.
Rule of Law The principle under which all persons, institutions, and entities are held accountable by law.
Civic Competence A belief that one can affect government policies.
Class-Consciousness A belief that one is a member of an economic group whose interests are opposed to people in other such groups.
Orthodox A belief that morality and religion ought to be of decisive importance.
Progressive A belief that personal freedom and solving social problems are more important than religion.
Civil Society Voluntary action that makes cooperation easier.
Political Tolerance The willingness to allow people with whom one disagrees to have the full protection of the laws when they express their opinions.
Demographics A sector of the population; target audience.
Free Enterprise An economic system in which private business operates in competition and largely free of state control.
Political Attitudes The opinions people hold about the role of government and the specific programs and policies that their government should implement.
Political Socialization The process in which people develop their political values, beliefs, attitudes, and ideology.
Political Efficacy The citizen's faith and trust in government and their belief that they can understand and influence political affairs.
