Who are the individuals involved in a veterinary practice? Veterinary, Vet Techs, Vet AssistantsReceptionist, Bookkeeper, Practice Manager, Kennel Attendant, Groomer, Vet Tech Specialist
Veterinarian: doctor who specializes in treatment of animals (diagnoses, prescribes, performs surgeries)
Veterinary Technician: work under license and direction of vet, like a nurse in human medicine
Veterinary Assistant: help vets and LVTs, no license required
Groomer: bathing of animals
Receptionist: answer phone, greet clients, front desk duties, etc.
Veterinary Technician Specialist: have greater skills and experience in a certain area (dentistry, behavior, etc.)
AVMA, NAVTA, AVAA: American Veterinary Medical Association, National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, American Veterinary Assistants Association
Business costs include: capital purchases (medical equipment, vehicles, clinical fixtures, etc.) and expenses (office supplies, medical instruments, pharm inventory, etc.)
Emergency Hospital: emergency care only, open 24 hrs, overnight care, patients referred to regular veterinarian or hospital
Veterinary Hospitals/Veterinary Clinics: long term care on site, routine visits, routine surgeries, sick patient care, may refer to more specialized hospitals if necessary
Referral Center: specialty care, $$$$$, MRI, ultrasound, cancer treatment, specialized surgery
Mobile Unit: self-contained unit for small//large animal vets, X-ray and surgical equipment, meds
Specific Patient Care: small animal, large animal, mixed practice, exotics, feline practice, equine practice, zoos/aquariums
Front Office: reception area, patient records, bookkeeping, billing, purchasing
Treatment Facilities: exam rooms, treatment rooms, hospital wards, sterile prep, surgery, recovery. exercise, boarding, grooming
Patient Diagnosis: initial examination, patient prep, radiology, laboratory, testing
Non-Treatment Facilities: laboratories, radiology, pharmacy, staff kitchen, break rooms, offices, public areas
Time management includes: hours, lunch, walk-ins or appointments, surgery times, types of appointments, catch-up times, call back, emergencies, patient discharge, cross-training
Personnel Manual: personnel policies like dress code, attendance, vacation, sick leave, code of conduct, etc.
Procedures Manual: may be included in personnel manual or personnel policies or may be a stand-alone document (information about regular events or practice and practice policy information)
