| altitude | The height of a thing above sea level |
| plates | Large sections of the Earth's crust |
| strata | Layers of rock |
| crust | The top layer on the surface of the Earth |
| magma | Molten rock, called lava when it reaches Earth's surface |
| vents | Cracks in the Earth's crust where lava comes out |
| erosion | The breaking-down of rocks or soil from wind, water, or ice |
