Yoruba | Language spoken in Santeria; African indigenous language that is used by the Yoruba people. Group of people from Nigeria and Benin who were slaves in Latin America. |
Carnival | Brazilian carnival – major holiday in Brazil that happens every year before Lent. Has religious and national importance for the country. Made a national holiday and event in Brazil in 1934 by the dictator Vargas. |
Clave | Instrument that is heavily used in Cuban music; used for timekeeping in salsa. Wooden sticks, basically. Used to keep the meter and from Africa. |
Jaleo | DR; term to describe the call-and-response portion of merengue/DR music. It is the third part of merengue music where the chorus is played. |
Shaman | Religious leader in Amazonian tribes who speaks to spirits and uses music as a way to speak to spirits of the rainforest and appease them. |
Estado Novo | Brazil; term to describe the period of dictatorship that persisted in Brazil in the 1900s; dictator wanted to unify the country despite different cultures. Led to Carnival becoming a national holiday. Translates to “New State” |
Semba | Predecessor of Samba; dance and music where people touch bellies. |
Escolas de samba | Samba schools, the only ones who were able to participate in the Carnival when Vargas made it a national event in Brazil. |
Montuno | Cuba; term to describe the portion of Cuban music that is call-and-response; usually a vocalist and instrumental call and response |
0richas | Cuba; name of deities in Santeria and other Yoruba religious traditions, each are known for unique qualities and abilities, some are even ancestors who turn into minor deities. |
Inca | Perue; a community that was well-organized, urban, and grounded in religious beliefs→ music played a large part in their festivals and they spoke Quechua. |
Ginga | Brazil; the 1__&3_4_ (slap on 4th beat) motion that exists in Capoeira; it is the back-and-forth motion that is the basis for this dance. |
Mestizo | the Spanish (European) and Indigenous mixed people. |
Charro | Mexico;the suits and costumes of Mariachi players. Became popular with movies as a costume and then associated with the music overall (like the sombrero and elaborate outfits) |
Syncretism | Melding of the African culture and Catholicism where the belief systems are contradicting and emerge in new and unexpected ways. [merging of 2 religions to form something new, African and Catholicism here] |
