ECE1-07 Toddlers
Term | Definition |

Sphincter Muscles | the muscles used to control urine flow and bowel movements |
Potty Training | children aged 1-3 learn how to begin using the toilet for elimination, allowing them to no longer use diapers or pullups (typically takes around 8 months) |
Training Pants | special thick absorbent underwear that children wear during potty training. |
Readiness (Toilet Training) | signals that a toddler exhibits that show they are interested and developmentally ready for potty training (dry for 2hrs, wanting to wear big kid pants, etc.) |
Dexterity | skillful use of and hands and fingers |
Large (gross) Motor Skills | physical abilities that use the biggest muscles of the body (such as arms and legs) |
Small (fine) Motor Skills | physical abilities that use the smallest muscles ( fingers, wrists and toes) |
Toddler | A child who is the age of 1 & 2 years old. (until 3rd birthday) |
Empathy | Being able to feel for someone else, understanding that what we do or say affects others |
Self-Concept | how a child sees themselves; what they believe about themselves |
Sibling Rivalry | the natural competition between brothers and sisters for the attention and approval of parents |
"My Plate" nutrition model | a representation of what a healthy diet should consist of, which includes 1/2 fruits and vegetables & 1/2 lean protein and grains |
"Terrible Twos" | the expectation that children begin to be difficult and disagreeable around the age of 2 and tend to have temper tantrums |
Negativism | the constant use of "no" or negative responses to all questions, even when they mean "yes" |
Stranger Anxiety | Nervousness when exposed to or introduced to unfamiliar people |
Parallel Play | Playing near or beside others, but not really with others |
Object Permanence | Understanding that an object still exists even when it is not in sight |
Deferred imitation | Watching another persons behavior and then imitating that behavior later |
Temperament | How a person responds and reacts to things that happen in the world around them |
Attachment | The strong emotional connection that develops between a child and their parent or primary care giver |
Symbolic Representation | Understanding that real people and things can be represented by pictures or other items |
