Apex Grammar

TermDefinition
Coordinating Conjunctions (FANBOYS) a word used to connect equal independent clauses, nouns, verbs
adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb
preposition descriptive location word
infinitive "to" verb ex- to jump
gerund a verb form ending in -ing that is used as a noun ex. SINGING creates a calm environment.
participle verb that functions as an adjective; example- A RUNNING horse galloped down the road.
cumulative adjective modify the same noun, but they are NOT separated by a comma
coordinating adjectives two adjectives with a similar meaning separated by a comma example- smart, funny
appositive phrase an interrupting definition
prepositional phrase used to add description
subject who or what the sentence is about
predicate tells what the subject is or does, a verb
object of the preposition the noun or pronoun that follows the preposition
adjective A word that describes a noun
comma a punctuation mark (,) used to indicate the separation of elements(clauses, phrases, words)
clause a group of words with a subject and a predicate (verb)
phrase a group of words (starts with either preposition, infinitive, or gerund)
transition word or group of words to help reader move from one idea to other.
comma splice the use of a comma to join two independent clauses
complex sentence one independent clause and at least one dependent clause
compound sentence two or more independent clauses, often joined by one or more coordinating conjunctions
simple sentence one subject and one predicate (can include phrases but NO conjunctions)
dependent clause contains a dependent conjunction, subject and verb
subordinate conjunction a word that links to a dependent clause
