Bourgeoisie (Bor-geez) | Middle class of society |
Enlightenment | A philosophical movement in the 18th century marked by the belief in science and logic over religion and tradition. |
Estate | A major social class, with political power (Clergy, Nobles) |
Guillotine | A machine for beheading people |
Louis XVI | King of France (Beheaded during the French revolution) |
Nobility | Second estate, ruling class |
Reign of Terror | A 10-month period of the French revolution when 17,000 were executed |
Robespierre (Rob-spe_air) | French lawyer and revolutionary leader |
Versailles (Ver-sigh) | The French palace that belonged to Louis XVI |
Battle of Concord | A battle of the American revolution in Massachusetts |
Battle of Lexington | The first battle of the American revolution, 1775. British out number the colonist and the colonist retreated. |
Intolerable Acts | Took away Massachusetts right to self govern, and was designed to punish the colonist |
Monopoly | Exclusive control over a service or product on the market |
Paul Revere | An American silversmith and patriot during American revolution. Road to Lexington yelling, "The British are coming!" |
Redcoats | Nickname for a British soldiers in the American revolution |
Revolution | An attempt by many people to overthrow an established government, usually violent. |
Samuel Adams | A Massachusetts politician who led the American revolution |
The Tea Acts | Act passed by the British colony created monopoly on tea, unfair to Americans tea merchants |
