Ancient Rome Vocab

QuestionAnswer
Pharisees Educated people who both observed and enforced Jewish law.
Sadducees Came from elite and powerful back rounds, cooperated with the Jewish.
Pax Romana Roman Peace, Lasted over 200 years.
Zealots Opposed Roman occupation. Believed that God would send a Messiah that would save the Jewish people from oppression.
Resurrection Coming back to life after being declared dead through divine intervention.
Baptism A practiced ritual cleansing by plunging into water.
Crucifixion A slow and painful Roman method of execution. Jesus was sentenced to Crucifixion.
Martyrs People who died for their beliefs. Many Christians were Martyrs for their beliefs in Jesus.
Bible Holy text that is composed of 2 major sections. The New/Old Testaments. Sacred book for Christians.
Old Testament The first part of the bible. 39 books, promised that a Messiah would come and save them.
Salvation Deliverance from sin, believed to be brought about by faith in Jesus Christ.
New Testament 2nd half of bible, records the life of Jesus and his earliest followers.
Gospels Translate as "good news", first four books in the New Testaments made bye: Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John.
Parables Stories with a moral, Jesus often used parables to explain important lessons.
Epistles Formal letters written by early leaders in the Christians Church.
Trinity The Christian understanding that God is represented in three persons: Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Ethics Issues of rights and wrongs and how to treat people.
Golden Rule A rule of ethical conduct that Jesus taught, written in Mathew 7:12 and Luke 6:31.
Ascension The ascent of Christ into heaven on the 40th day after the resurrection.
Denominators Christians have divided into different branches. Came down to church tradition, worship style, and/or history.
Good Friday The Friday before Easter, Christians believe Jesus died to pay for our sins.
Easter Celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Providence The protective care of God or of nature as a spiritual power.
Messiah The promised deliverer of the Jewish nation prophesied in the Old Testament. Hebrew word meaning Christ.
Sermon on the Mount A speech delivered by Jesus to the disciples and others. Revealing key fundemental of Christian teachings.
The Great Commision The in structure from Jesus to his disciples to spread the Gospels to all the nations of the world.
Disciples A personal follower of Jesus during his life, especially one of the 12 Apostles.
Conversion The fact of changing one's religion or belief system.
Sin An immoral act considered to be a transgression or violation against Gods law.
Repentance The action of reperting, regret or lemorce.
