Why did Eamon De Valera refuse to go over to London for treaty negotiations? De Valera refused to go over to the Negotiations as he said that he viewed himself as a symbol of the Republic and as president he shouldn't be involved in anything political
What was De Valera’s solution to not go and lead the delegation? De Valera decided to elect in his place plenipotentiaries.
What is a plenipotentiary? A plenipotentiary is a person who has full power to represent a government or sovereign in diplomatic negotiations.
When was the first plenary session of talks? 11th October 1921
What did the British delegation want? For Ireland to remain in the British Commonwealth.
What did the Irish want? 32 County Republic.
What was controversial about the terms? The controversial negotiations of the Anglo-Irish Treaty centered around the issues of Irish independence, the extent of British influence in Ireland, and the partition of the country.
What was dominion status? Was that of a Free State within the Empire, with a common citizenship, and, by virtue of that membership in the Empire and of that common citizenship, owning allegiance to the King.
Why were the irish against this? Dominion status still gave the opportunity for the British to interfere in Irish Affairs
What did the Irish offer instead? External association
What was External association? External association was a proposed alternative to full independence, in which Ireland would remain a member of the British Empire but have some control over its own affairs. The king wouldn't be head of state but recognised as head of the alliance.
What happened on 3rd December 1921? The Irish delegation went back to the cabinet to inform De Valera over the proposed draft of the Treaty and discuss topic of Oath of allegiance
What did Cathal Brugha say that caused outrage? "The British picked their men." Insinuating that Collins and Griffith were traitors
What did Lloyd George say 4th December 1921? He said "if the treaty isn't signed within 3 days terrible and immediate will ensue"
When was the treaty signed? 2:10am, 6th December 1921, Downing Street.
