Ch16 Painting/Refini

Tack Cloth- a rag with coating that holds dust and debris
Paint settling when paint sits idle and pigments, metallic flakes or mica particles settle to the bottom
Body ID number give information about how the vehicle is equipped
Application Stroke a side to side movement of the spray gun to distribute the mist properly on the vehicle
Spray gun distance is measured from the gun tip to the surface being painted
Short Spray Distance causes high velocity mist to ripple the wet film
Long Spray Distance causes a greater percentage of the thinner to evaporate, resulting in orange peel or dry spray
Spray Gun Angle refers to whether the gun is tilted up or down or sideways
Spray Gun Triggering involves stopping the paint spray before you stop moving the gun sideways
Spray Gun Speed refers to how fast the gun is moved sideways while spraying
Banding Coat is done to deposit enough paint on edges or corners of the surface
Overlap Strokes involve making each spray gun coat cover about half of the previous coat of paint.
Paint Thickness is measured in mils or thousandths of an inch
Mil Gauge can be used to measure the thickness of the paint on the vehicle
Gun Heeling occurs when the gun is allowed to tilt
Gun Arching occurs when the gun is NOT moved parallel to the surface
Incorrect Gun Stroke Speed means when you are moving the gun too slowly or too quickly
Improper Spray Overlap means you are NOT covering half of the previous pass with the next pass
Improper Coverage means the paint film thickness is NOT uniform or it is too thin
Full Wet Coat is done by moving the spray gun slightly slower than normal
Dust Coat a very light, thin coat
Tack Coat another name for a dust coat
Shading Coat progressive applications of paint on the boundary of spot repair areas so that a color difference is not noticeable
Paint Blending involves tapering or fanning the new paint gradually in to the old paint to provide a smooth transition between the two finishes
Spot Repair involves painting an area smaller than the panel
Panel Repairs involve painting/refinishing a complete body part
Overall Refinishing involves painting/refinishing the whole vehicle
Paint Overlap refers to the area where one vertical painted area overlaps the new area being painted
Wet Edge means that the area just sprayed will still be wet when starting on a new adjoining area
Let-down Panel/ Spray out helps you find the correct number of coats needed to achieve a color match
Spray Gun Washer A machine that automatically cleans your spray guns
Spray Gun Lubrication involves placing a small amount of oil on packing and high friction points
VOC Tracking Systems help monitor and record materials used to abide by environmental regulations
