Plot Structures

Cause and Effect | Cause:Why something happens Effect: What happens as a result |
Foreshadowing | When the author will give you an idea of what is coming up, but not tell you. |
Flashbacks | Flashbacks are used to bring the reader's mind to something that has already happened. |
Fable | A short tale usually with animal characters, told to illustrate a morale, or point out how people should think or behave. |
Folktale | A story that hes been passed down from generation to generation by mouth. |
Fairy tale | A short tale that begins with once upon a time, has a clear villain or hero, and ends with happily ever after. |
Legend | A story, often partially true, about a hero and events that supposidly occurred in the distant past. |
Myth | A story that often deals with gods, or goddesses, it may explain the origins of natural phonomena |
Play | A story written to be performed by actors for an audience. |
Poetry | Language used in an exceptional way to communicate an idea more powerfully than ordinary speech. |
Satire | Can appear in prose, drama, or poetry. Satire is distinguished from other types of humor by it's purpose, witch is to point out the flaws of someone or something, by poking fun at it. |
Short Story | A brief work of fictional narrative prose |
Tall Tale | A story with wildly exaggerated characters and events |
Realistic Fiction | A story that could be true, but has fictional events and characters |
Survival | A story based in the wilderness where a character needs to find a way to live using their own abilities. |
Mystery | A story where a question is to be answered; includes elements of suspense |
Dystopian | A story written when a new type of government system is in place, often after some type of cataclysmic event |
Horror | A story that is developed with suspense, often with elements of death. |
Science Fiction | A story that usually involves ideas of traveling through time, traveling to another universe, or other scientific mysteries. |
Fantasy | A story that includes ideas of animals having powers, people with magical abilities, and other outlandish possibilities. |
