Allure v. to entice with something desirable; to tempt
Aloof adj. Distant, reserved in manner; uninvolved
Also-ran n. One who is defeated in a race, election, or other competition; loser
Altercation n. A heated quarrel
Alternative n. The choice between two mutually exclusive possibilities, a situation presenting such a choice
Ambiance n. Mood, feeling; general atmosphere
Amenable adj. Agreeable, responsible to authority, pleasant, willing to give in to the wishes of another
Amplify v. to make larger, louder, or more powerful
Antecedent n. Going before; preceding; an occurrence or event preceding another 2. What a pronoun is replacing
Anterior adj. Situated in front
Appalling adj. Filling with dismay; causing horror or consternation
Aptitude n. Capacity for learning, natural ability
Archaic adj. Belonging to an earlier time, ancient; outdated
Arduous adj. Hard, difficult, tiresome
Artisan n. A worker skilled in a craft
Allusion n. A brief reference to a person, event, place (real or fictitious) work of art. It could also be a casual reference to a famous historical event or literary figure (classical allusion). Example: My brother is the King Kong of his classmates
Ambiguity n. Allows for two or more simultaneous interpretations of a word, phrase, action, or situation, all of which can be supported by the context of a work.
