Rocks and Minerals
Definition | Term |
---|---|
A naturally occurring, inorganic, solid, that has a crystal structure, and a definite chemical composition | Minerals |
One or more minerals and/or the remains of living things(fossils) | Rocks |
A special quality or trait that makes a thing different from others, help us determine IF a sample is a mineral | Characteristics |
nonliving; does not come from living or once living things | Inorganic |
something that comes from the Earth, not human made | Naturally occurring |
the orderly repeating pattern of atoms that form a crystal | Crystalline structure |
always contains certain elements in definite proportions. | Definite chemical composition |
helps us determine which mineral a sample is | Physical properties |
the color of the minerals, but is not always reliable | Color |
The way a mineral reflects light; two basic categories include: metallic (shines like a metal), non-metallic (the exact opposite) | Luster |
the ability of a mineral to resist being scratched | Hardness |
The color of the mineral’s powder when scratched against a streak plate | Streak |
Two ways to describe how a mineral breaks: Cleavage = when you can tell where the mineral will break; it breaks along flat, smooth lines. Fracture = you can’t tell where it will break; it breaks along uneven or jagged lines. | Cleavage/Fracture |
Created from particles of other rocks or remains of plants and animals which are pressed and cemented together. | Sedimentary rock |
forms when molten rock (lava or magma) cools and hardens; sub types - Extrusive and Intrusive | Igneous rock |
They are formed when an existing rock is changed by extreme temperature, pressure, or chemical reactions. | Metamorphic rock |
The continual process by which new rock forms from old rock material. | Rock cycle |
What something is made out of. The parts that make something up. | Composition |
