What Is The Role Of The Scrub Nurse? | -A competent surgical assistant, able to enter sterile field. -Prep of the instrument trolley, keeps the operating field neat and free of unnecessary instruments, anticipates the needs of the vs and passes instruments, holding instruments and tissues. |
What Are Some Considerations For Passing Instruments As A Scrub Nurse? | -Passed to the vs in a positive manner; the vs should not have to look away from the site. -Placed firmly into hand, in a position that does not require the vs to reposition them before use. If curved, passed with the tips facing upwards. |
What Are The Aims Of Scrubbing Up (Aseptic Preparation Of Hands)? | -Remove any gross dirt. -Reduce as much as possible the number of micro-organisms on the skin. |
What Are The Basic Principles Of Scrubbing Up? | -The procedure should be routine. -It should not take up an excessive amount of time – 5 minutes first scrub of the day. -The scrub solution used and technique should not irritant the skin. |
What Are The Stages Of Scrubbing Up (Stages 1-3)? | 1) Remove any jewellery or watch. 2) Finger nails should be cut short and any nail varnish removed. 3) Adjust the water (either foot or elbow operated) to a suitable flow and temperature. |
What Are The Stages Of Scrubbing Up (Stages 4-5)? | 4) Wash the hands thoroughly using a plain soap. At this stage clean the nails with a nail pick. 5) Once the hands have been washed, wash the arms up to and including the elbow. |
What Are The Stages Of Scrubbing Up (Stages 6-7)? | 6) Rinse the hands and then the elbows by allowing water to wash away the soap from the hands towards the elbow. 7) Repeat this procedure using a surgical scrub solution e.g. Hibiscrub or povidone iodine. |
What Are The Stages Of Scrubbing Up (Stages 8-10)? | 8) Rinse off the scrub solution as in step (6). 9) Take a sterile scrubbing brush and systematically scrub the hands. 10) Either rinse the brush and use it in the other hand or discard it and take a second. |

What Is The Closed Method Of Gloving? | -Hands are kept inside the sleeves of the gown whilst gloving takes place. -Minimises the chances of contaminating the gloves. -Outside of the glove doesn’t contact the skin. |
What Is The Open Method Of Gloving? | -Hands are extended out of the sleeves. -Disadvantage that the gloves are relatively easily contaminated by skin contact. |
What Is The Plunge Method Of Gloving? | -Sterile glove is held open by a scrubbed assistant. -The hand is inserted into the glove. -High risk of contamination – not used very often (emergencies). |
