acropolis | a defensive complex built on a high hill. The name comes from the Greek akro for "high" or "extreme/extremity" or "edge", and polis for "city"; acropolis is translated as "high city", "city on the edge" or "city in the air" |
agora | a gathering place (the marketplace of ancient Greece) bard (n) - someone who writes or performs epic poems or stories about heroes and their deeds |
bas-relief | sculptural form in which the projection from the surrounding surface is slight and no part of the modeled form is undercut or engraved. example: the design on a penny or nickel |
city-state | a city that with its surrounding territory forms an independent state. |
colony | a country or area under the full or partial political control of another country, typically a distant one, and occupied by settlers from that country |
democracy | a form of government run by the people (there are different forms of democracies) |
ephor | a high-ranked government official in Sparta who was elected by the council of elders |
epic poem | a lengthy narrative poem typically about the extraordinary deeds of extraordinary characters |
helots | enslaved laborers in Sparta (often captured during invasions) |
javelin | a light spear designed primarily to be thrown |
oracle | a sacred shrine where a priest or priestess spoke for a god or goddess (can also be the representative person who spoke for the deity themselves) |
oligarchy | a government in which a small group has control |
patina | a green or brown film on the surface of bronze or similar metals, produced by oxidation over a long period. |
phalanx | a group of armed foot soldiers in ancient Greece arranged in close rows |
polis | a Greek city-state |
tyrant | someone who seizes powers and rules with total authority |
