Safety and Certification

QuestionAnswer
safety involves using proper work habits to prevent personal injury and property damage.
accidents are unplanned events that hurt people, break tools, damage vehicles, or have other adverse effects on the business and its employees.
asphyxiation refers to anything that prevents normal breathing.
chemical burns result when a corrosive chemical such as paint remover injures your skin or eyes.
electrocution results when electricity passes through your body.
fire is rapid oxidation of a flammable material, producing high temperatures.
combustibles paints, solvents, reducers, gasoline, dirty rags
explosions are air pressure waves that result from extremely rapid burning.
physical injury is a general category that includes cuts, broken bones, strained backs, and similar injuries.
manufacturer's instructions are very detailed procedures for the specific product.
safety program is a written shop policy designed to protect the health and welfare of personnel and customers.
shop layout is the general organization or arrangement of work areas.
metalworking area is where parts are removed, repaired, and installed.
repair stall/bay is a work area for one vehicle
frame rack is a large piece of equipment designed to straighten damaged vehicle structures.
front end rack/alignment rack is used to measure and adjust the steering and suspension of a vehicle before and after repairs.
Pneumatic air operated equipment
Hydraulic oil filled equipment
tool and equipment storage room is an area for safely keeping specialized tools and equipment.
classroom may be provided for lectures, demonstrations, and meetings of shop personnel.
paint prep area is where the vehicle is readied for painting or refinishing. The vehicle is cleaned and masked in this area.
finishing area/spray booth is where the body is painted. It normally has a large metal enclosure to keep out dirt and circulate clean, fresh air.
shop office contains business equipment.
emergency telephone numbers These numbers should include a doctor, hospital, and fire and police departments.
first aid kit includes many of the medical items needed to treat minor shop injuries.
safety signs give information that helps to improve shop safety. Signs are often posted to denote fire exits, extinguisher locations, dangerous or flammable chemicals, and other information
gasoline is a highly flammable petroleum or crude oil
spontaneous combustion fire that starts by itself
electrical fires result when excess current causes wiring to overheat, melt, and burn.
fire extinguisher is designed to quickly smother a fire.
electrocution results when electric current passes through the human body.
ventilated a good supply of fresh air flowing through an area
carbon monoxide (CO) a deadly, odorless and invisible gas produced by a vehicle engine exhaust
asbestos dust used in the manufacture of older brake and clutch assemblies is a cancer causing agent
automatic transmission shifts through gears automatically using a hydraulic system
manual transmission must be hand shifted through each forward gear
safety glasses is suitable with only minor danger, as when blowing off dust or sanding with an air sander
full face shield when there is more danger from flying particles, as when grinding
rubber gloves/plastic gloves to protect yourself from the harmful effects of corrosive liquids, undercoats, and finishes.
jumpsuit/lint free coveralls should be worn when in the spraying area
leather shoes that have non slip soles to prevent falls and foot injuries.
Cap wear when sanding, grinding, and doing similar jobs,
painter's stretch hood this is a cloth head covering with a see through lens for protection from overspray or airborne materials
bump cap this is a thick cloth hat without a bill that protects your head from minor injuries while working.
earplugs/earmuffs protect your eardrums from damaging noise levels
jack stands support a vehicle whenever you must work underneath it
hydraulic jacks are used to raise a vehicle before placing jack stands and to lower it after working
lift safety catch ensure that the lift cannot lower while you are working underneath the vehicle.
respirators are needed in the paint shop to keep airborne materials from being inhaled
dust respirator/particle respirator is a filter that fits over your nose and mouth to block small airborne particles.
cartridge filter respirator protect against vapors and spray mists
isocyanates are very hazardous materials that are often used to "accelerate" (speed
air supplied respirator consists of a half-mask, full face piece, hood, or helmet, to which clean, breathable air is supplied through a hose from a separate air source.
fit test checks for respirator air leaks
dustless sanding system uses a blower or air pump to draw airborne dust into a storage container, much like a vacuum cleaner.
manufacturer's warnings give important procedures for the safe use of products.
material safety data sheets (MSDS) available from all product manufacturers, detail chemical composition and precautionary information for all products that can present a health or safety hazard. *Now called SDS Safety Data Sheets*
Right to Know Laws is for employers to provide their employees with a safe working place as it relates to hazardous materials.
OSHA Occupational Safety and Health Administration, meant to assure safe and healthy working conditions for working people.
EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)
liability means that you are financially responsible for damage or injuries resulting from improper repairs.
ASE certification is a testing program to help prove that you are a knowledgeable collision repair or refinishing technician.
ASE tests include multiple choice questions pertaining to the service and repair of a vehicle
