Unit Vocabulary
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Expression | A combination of constants, variables, coefficients, and symbols that show the value of something. No equal sign. Can be simplified if there are like terms to combine or formatting for the distributive property |
A number used to multiply a variable in an algebraic expression. The number that comes before the variable (letter). | In the term 2x the 2 is a coefficient |
Constant | A fixed value. A number on its own in an expression or equation. |
Variable | A letter or symbol that represents an unknown number. |
Term | A single constant, variable, or variable with coefficient. |
Equation | A mathematical statement that the values of two expressions are equal. Must have an equal sign. Can be solved. |
Like Terms | Terms whose variables and their exponents are the same. |
Simplify | To combine all like terms and distribute (to make the expression as simple as possible) |
Perimeter | The distance around the outside of a 2-dimensional shape. Perimeter is found by adding the lengths of the sides of a shape. |
Distributive Property | Says that multiplying a number by a group of numbers added together is the same as doing each multiplication separately. There is a term outside of parentheses with one (or more) terms inside the parentheses. |
Greatest Common Factor (GCF) | The largest number that divides two or more numbers. When asked to factor an expression, divide both terms by the GCF and write your answer as the product of the GCF and the expression left after dividing by the GCF. |
Evaluate | To find the value of an expression |
Substitute | When given a value of a variable you can replace the variable with the known number. |
Inequality | An inequality says that two values are not equal. |
