TermDefinition
algebraic expression An expression containing numbers, variable, and/or operations
associative property The way in which three or more numbers are grouped for addition or multiplication does not change their sum or product, respectively
coefficient A numerical factor in a term of an algebraic expression. A number that multiplies a variable
commutative property The order in which two numbers are added or multiplied does not change their sum or product, respectively
constant term The term in an expression that doesn't change value
decreased Made something smaller
difference The result when one number is subtracted from another OR how two amounts are not equal
distributive property States that mulitplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend by the number and then adding the products
double number line When the zeros align, the vertical values create equivalent ratios
equivalent Naming the same number, quantity, amount, or measure
equivalent expressions An expression that names the same number, quantity, amount, or measure
evaluate To determine the value
exponent The number of times to repeat the base number and multiply (AKA power)
expression A collection of numbers, symbols, and/or operation signs that stands for a number. There is no equal sign.
factor The values that are multiplied to get a product
factoring an expression Write an expression as a product of factors
generate To create or make
greatest common factor The factor in common that is the greatest
increased Made something larger
like terms Terms that contain the same variable which are raised to the exact same power. Only the coefficients can be different
numerical expression A mathematical phrase including numbers and operations without an equal sign
order of operations Rules that define which procedures to perform first in order to evaluate a given mathematical expression PEMDAS
power The number of times to repeat the base number and multiply (AKA exponent)
prime number A whole number that has exactly two different factors, 1 and itself
product The answer to a multiplication problem
quotient The answer to a division problem
reciprocal One of two numbers whose product is 1
substitute To trade variables and/or numbers of equal value
sum The answser to an addition problem
term Parts of an expression separated by + or - signs
value how much or how many
variable A letter or symbol that represents a number
