TermDefinition
Civics The study of what it means to be an American citizen.
refugee A person who flees persecution in his or her homeland to seek safety in other nations.
Government The organizations, institutions, and people that acts on behalf of a group of people.
Values Ideas that people hold dear and try to live by.
citizen A member of a nation
Naturalization Process by which an alien becomes a citizen.
alien A citizen of another country who lives in the United States.
immigrant A person who comes to the United States from another country to settle as a permanent resident.
quotas Limits placed on the number of immigrants that may enter the United States each year.
native-born citizen A person born in any one of the 50 states or territory is a(n):
Melting Pot Theory The belief that people who come into our country lose their culture and assimilate into American culture.
Salad Bowl Theory The belief that immigrants do not lose their culture as they integrate into the American way of life.
