| maquiladora | factory in Mexico that assembles parts made in the United States elsewhere into products for export |
| arid | lacking enough water for things to grow |
| petroleum | a type of oil that is the source for gasoline |
| drought | a period of lower than normal precipitation |
| eorsion | the wearing away of Earth's surface by the movement of water ,wind,ice, and gravity |

| butte | a flat-topped hills, smaller that a mesa |
