Retail - Safety

This study stack includes terminology from the mandatory focus unit on Safety.

TermDefinition
WHS Workplace Health and Safety
Workplace health Awareness of the procedures required to ensure workplace is a clean and healthy place to work. Includes physical and mental health issues.
Workplace safety Awareness of safe work practices and procedures e.g. WHS induction training, uses of PPE etc.
Risk The possibility of meeting danger or suffering harm or loss.
Risk assessment A determination of the degree of safety risk associated with work practices.
Risk management Procedure whereby staff identify the hazard, assess associated risks, use appropriate control measures to eliminate or minimise risks, monitor and review the control measures
Hazard Anything in the workplace that has the potential to cause harm to employees, customers
PPE Personal protective equipment – supplied by employers for employees use e.g. rubber boots, safety eye glasses, rubber gloves.
MSDS sheet Document outlining safe preparation and use of dangerous goods and hazardous substances.
Work cover WorkCover NSW administers and enforces compliance with the WHS Act within NSW. It is a statutory authority.
Safety procedures Ways that safety and safety concerns are addressed within a retail business.
Store policy and procedures Usually written instructions on how a store deals with varies issues.
Relevant personnel List of people with particular responsibilities within an organisation
Manual handling Any activity requiring the use of force exerted by a person to lift, lower, push, pull, carry or otherwise move, hold or restrain any animate or inanimate object
Workplace consultation A process where information or advise is sought through conferring with others.
Emergency procedure Usually, written instructions on how staff are to deal with emergency situations – steps to be followed and who to notify, paperwork to be completed.
Code of practice The practical guidelines developed by consultation with industry representatives, workers and employers, special interest groups and government agencies to describe how to implement WHS requirements.
Designated personnel Personnel with specific jobs within an organisation. Maybe safety officer, first aid person, evacuation warden.
Legislation Acts or statutes passed by a State, Territory or Federal Parliament and enacted with the ascent (signature) of the sovereign or representative.
Workplace Health and Safety Act Act of Parliament relevant to workplace health and safety.
Assembly point A known and designated point outside a store where staff are to meet and be accounted for in the event of an evacuation. Must have signage – e.g. evacuation meeting point.
Safety audit A detailed, documented checklist designed to assess all areas, procedures, equipment and people in order to identify any deficiencies regarding safety
PCBU Person Conducting Business or Undertaking
Scope of responsibility Acting within your own role / carry out the duties are are trained and paid to do.
Risk control Measures, processes and strategies in place to control the level of risk to personnel.
