Question | Answer |
---|---|
Gluteus Maximus | (hip extension and external rotation of femur): Upper ilium, sacrum, and coccyx → gluteal tuberosity on femur and iliotibial tract |
Biceps Femoris | (hip extension, knee flexion, external rotation of both): Ischial tuberosity → head of the fibula and lateral condyle of tibia |
Semitendinosus | (knee flexion): Ischial tuberosity → superior aspect of the medial portion of the tibial shaft |
Semimembranosus | (knee flexion): Ischial tuberosity → the posterior surface of the medial tibial condyle |
Rectus Femoris | (knee extension and hip flexion): anterior inferior iliac spine and ilium → patella |
Sartorius | (hip: flexion, abduction, and external rotation/ knee: flexion and internal rotation when flexed): anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) → the proximal medial aspect of the tibial shaft, near the tibial tubercle |
Tensor Fascia Latae | (hip flexion, abduction, and internal rotation): anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) and anterior aspect of the iliac crest → deep and superficial fascia of the IT band |
Iliopsoas | (major hip flexor): iliac fossa, T12 and the lumbar → lesser trochanter of the femur |
Pectineus | (hip flexion and adduction): pectineal line of the pubic bone → pectineal line of the femur |
Gluteus medius | (major abductor of the hip): Dorsal ilium inferior to iliac crest → lateral and superior surfaces of the greater trochanter |
Gluteus minimus | (helps abduct hip): Dorsal ilium between inferior and anterior gluteal line → anterior surface of the greater trochanter |
Piriformis | (external rotation of the hip): Pelvic surface of the sacrum → greater trochanter of femur |
Adductor Magnus | (hip adduction): inferior pubic ramus → gluteal tuberosity, medial lip of linea aspera, medial supracondylar ridge, and adductor tubercle of femur |
Adductor longus | (hip adduction, flexion, and external rotation): Anterior surface of the body of the pubis, lateral to pubic symphysis → middle third of the linea aspera of femur |
Gracilis | (hip adduction, knee flexion, knee internal rotation): Medial surface of the inferior body of the pubis → proximal aspect of the medial surface of the tibia |
Adductor Brevis | (hip abduction and flexion): Anterior surface of inferior pubic ramus, inferior to adductor longus → medial lip of linea aspera of femur |
Vastus Medialis | (knee extension, stabilizes patella): inferior intertrochanteric line, medial lip of linea aspera, upper medial supracondylar of femur → patella via quadriceps tendon and tibial tuberosity via patellar tendon. |
Vastus Lateralis | (knee extension): Greater trochanter, intertrochanteric line, and linea aspera of the femur → patella via quadriceps tendon and tibial tuberosity via patellar tendon. |
Vastus Intermedius | (knee extension): anterior and lateral femoral shaft → patella via quadriceps tendon and tibial tuberosity via patellar tendon |
Gastrocnemius | (powerful plantar flexion): Medial head from the posterior non articular surface of the medial femoral condyle, lateral head from the lateral surface of the lateral femoral condyle → middle ⅓ of the posterior calcaneus via achilles tendon |
Soleus | (plantar flexion): shaft of tibia and fibula → calcaneus via achilles tendon |
Tibialis posterior | (inversion of foot, aids plantarflexion): interosseous membrane of the tibia and fibula → navicular bone with slips to cuneiform, cuboid metatarsals 2-4 |
Tibialis anterior | (dorsiflexion and inversion): superior ⅔ of anterior surface of tibia → medial cuneiform and first metatarsal (big toe) |
Flexor digitorum longus | (flexes the lateral 4 toes): middle half of the tibia → four tendons into distal phalanges of lateral 4 toes |
Flexor hallucis longus | (extends great toe and dorsiflexion of ankle): Anterior surface of fibula and adjacent interosseous membrane → base and dorsal center of the distal phalanx of big toe |
Peroneus longus | (eversion of foot and plantar flexion of ankle): Head of fibula, upper ½-⅔ of lateral fibular shaft → medial cuneiform and lateral side of 1st metatarsal base |
Peroneus brevis | (foot eversion and plantar flexion of ankle): Inferior ⅔ of lateral fibular surface, anterior and posterior intermuscular septa of leg →base of 5th metatarsal |
