Reason Clear and ordered thinking
Ignorance Lack of knowledge or information
Natural Rights Rights that belong to all humans from birth; life, liberty, and property
Enlightenment A movement that emphasized science and reason as guides to help see the world more clearly
Justice The ideal of fairness, especially when it comes to protecting rights or punishing crime
Class One of the groups in a society that different types of people are divided into according to their jobs, income, education etc.
Contract A legal agreement
Liberty Freedom from unfair or unjust government control
Social Contract An agreement among the people to set up a government and obey its laws
Separation of power The division of power among the different branches of government
Balance of Powers The sharing and balancing of power among different branches of government so no one branch can completely control the others
Colony A country or area that is under the political control of a more powerful country, usually one that is far away
Parliament The group of people who are elected to make a country's laws and discuss important national affairs
Massacre When a lot of people are killed violently, especially people who cannot defend themselves
Veto The right of a president or governor to reject bills passed by the legislature
Nominate To officially suggest someone or something for an important position, duty, or prize
Amendment A change or addition to a document
Congress The legislative branch of the United States government. They make the laws.
Justice The ideal of fairness, especially when it comes to protecting rights or punishing wrongdoings (crimes)
Assert To state very wrongly your right to something
Commerce The buying and selling of goods and services
