Abdication | To formally leave or give up a throne |
Absolutism | Political practice of one ultimate and centralized authority over a country, usually as a monarch or dictator |
Enlightenment | An intellectual and political movement in Europe with an emphasis on reason, liberty, and separation of powers |
Divine Right | Political doctrine that encourages absolutism stating that a monarch's right to rule comes from God, not the people |
Palace of Versailles | Massive palace built in France by Louis XIV |
Leviathan | Written by Thomas Hobbes; defends absolute monarchy describing humans as living in a primitive state of nature |
Sovereign | An ultimate ruler; someone who possesses much political power. |
Magna Carta | Document that guarantees English political liberties, signed by King James |
Glorious Revolution | A bloodless exchange of power in England when James II war run out of England by William and Mary |
