Non-chord tones
non-chord tones in music
Term | Definition |

non-chord tones | tones that do not belong to the chord |
passing tone | notes that pass between chord tones approached by a step and left by a step in the same direction |
neighbor tone | move away from a note by step then return to note approached by step left by step in opposite direction |
appoggiatura | usually accented on the beat approached by leap and left by step |
escape tone | approached by step and left by leap in the opposite direction |
double neighbor | both the upper and lower neighbor occur before the return to the starting tone |
anticipation | non-chord tone that anticipates the arrival of the next chord and is often found at cadences approached by a step or a leap and left by the same note |
pedal point/tone | note that is held through changing harmonies, starting as a chord tone before before becoming a non-chord tone, often in bass approached by the same note and left by the same note |
suspencions | accented by non-chord tones, classified by numbers (9-8, 7-6, 4-3, and 2-3 in the bass) approached by the same note and left by a step down |
reverse (retardation) | usually an accented non-chord tone, meaning it occurs on a downbeat approached by the same note and resolves up by a step |
