Forces and Motion

QuestionAnswer
Thrust / Applied force. This is a force with is applied to an object by another object or by a person. If a person is pushing a desk across the room, then there is a ______ force acting upon the desk. This force is the force exerted on the desk by the person.
Weight force The force of gravity is the force with which the earth, moon, or other massive body attracts an object. All objects upon earth experience the force of gravity which is directed "downwards" towards the centre of the earth.
Support force A force that completely balances the weight of an object at rest.
Buoyancy force The upward force exerted by a fluid on an object that is partially or fully immersed in the fluid.
Friction force A contact force that acts against the movement of an object. It occurs when the surface of one object comes in contact with the surface of another.
Tension Force A pulling force exerted on an object by a string, rope or rod.
Magnetic force A force that acts at a distance between two magnetics.
Air resistance The force that acts in the opposite direction to an object moving through the air.
To get the weight of something you... Gravity x Mass
To calculate speed... Distance / time
To calculate distance... Speed x time
To calculate time.... Distance / speed
What direction do the magnetic lines go to? North to south
Types of forces - Thrust, magnetic, gravitational, support, tension, buoyancy, weight, friction and magnetic.
3 types of contact force Friction, support, thrust.
3 types of non-contact force Gravitational, magnetic, electrical.
When is something more stable? More base = more stability
To calculate force - Mass x acceleration
What is a force? A push or a pull or a twist
To decrease friction, you... Using lubricants such as oil or grease, making a surface smoother.
To increase friction, you... Making the surfaces rough, with gravel or sandpaper.
To calculate the average speed in a distance/time graph we...... Rise over run Distance / Time

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
