scales | ordered collection of pitches in whole and half step patterns |
chromatic scales | a symmetrical scale with all pitches a half step apart |

diatonic notes | notes played within the scale |
chromatic notes | notes played outside the scale |
key signature | shows which pitches are going to be consistently sharp or flat throughout the piece (shows key/tonal center) |

key | a specific series of notes based on a pattern on whole and half steps that define a tonality |
natural/pure minor | no alterations to key signature |
harmonic minor | raised 7th of natural minor |
melodic minor | raised 6th and 7th of a natural minor ascending but natural when descending |
relative major/minor | a major and minor key that have the same key signature but start on a different note |
parallel major/minor | a major and minor scale that start on the same note but their key signature is different |
circle of fifths | the relationship of the tonal center to each other with each key a fifth apart |
solmization | designating notes of the scale by the solfege |
solfeggio | sight singing using the notes defined by solfege |
scale degree names | identify and indicate the harmony of the chords built on each scale degree |

supertonic | 2nd scale degree |
mediant | 3rd scale degree |
subdominant | 4th scale degree |
dominant | 5th scale degree |
submediant | 6th scale degree |
leading tone | 7th scale degree |
subtonic | 7th scale degree in a natural minor scale |
raised submediant | 6th scale degree in a melodic minor scale |
pentatonic scale | has 5 tones with no half steps or active tones; isn't major or minor |
