Basic parts, location and function of bones within Canine Skull

Craninal Cavity protects brain w/o mandible = Cranium
Temporal Bone ouses hearing & balancing organs, nerves, vessels form TMJ surface joins with zygomatic bone to form zygomatic arch (cheek bone)
Frontal Bone joinging with suture b/w cranium & face to enclose facial cavity forms face & roof of skull
Parietal Bone shapes & protects brain
Occipital Bone symetrical & unpaired @ caudal makes up nuchal wall attaches to mucle that connects head -- neck -- spine
Lacrimal Bone flat & angular bone providing structure & support to Lacrimal apparatus (tear/crying system)
Nasal Bone makes up 3 nasal vaults support nasal spectum
Mandible Lower jaw with lower teeth for chewing
Maxilla upper jaw holding upper teeth, forming the nasal frame - stabilizes with small wires (roots) in teeth
Incisive Bone part of maxilla bearing the upper incisive teeth
Zygomatic Bone AKA: Malar bone, helps chewing and for pill giving
Magnum Foramen largest in sull passage of nerve system connecting brain to spinal cord
Sagittal Crest fin structure @ top, seen in dogs with longer noses indication of strong jaw for eating & chewing
Atlantoaxial Joint Synovial Joint allows head to mve side to side
Atlantooccipital Joint Synovial Ellisoid joint: connects occipital bone of skull to spine flexion & extension for cranium motion
Temporomandibular Joint Synovial Joint: found in bones moving agest each other connects madible to skull allowing mouth to open & close
Temporohyoid Joint Sychodrosis Joint: holds bony elements together ensures attachment of hyoid & temporal bone of each side
