equal temperament | one interval is perfectly in tune; the rest are equally out of tune so they sound in tune together |
octave equivalence | 2 notes with a ratio of frequency so close that we can call them by the same name |
pitch class | all the notes with the same name regardless of register |
displacement | moving one of the notes in an interval to get them in the same octave range |
melodic interval | an interval with notes played one after the other |
harmonic interval | an interval with notes played together |
simple interval | numerical size is 8 or less |
compound interval | numerical size is more than 8 |
interval inversion | starting with a simplified interval, top note becomes the bottom, and bottom becomes the top |
modes | the way that you do some things |
performance practice | the way you perform music, not necessarily written on the music |
musica ficta | tuning changes musicians do on the fly |
k (card inality) | how many of whatever you're counting you have |
(k^2 - 2) ---------- 2 | shows how many intervals there are |
interval class vectors | a tally of each interval class inside the set, written as a six-digit number enclosed in angle brackets |
a scale | gives you pitch class content of a key |
relative keys | keys which have the same base diatonic collection |
parallel keys | have the same tonic or starting note |
chord | 3 or more pitch classes that, when sounded together, make a complex sound |
temporal art form | an art form that requires time for its existence |
tonic | the referential pitch class of a key |
root | the referential pitch class of a chord |
bass | the lowest functional sound in a sonority (sound) |
doubling | when you have one of the pitch classes multiple times |
beat | a regular reoccuring pulse in music |
íctus | beginnings of beats |
tempo | the speed of beats, not by the speed of the quickest note |
meter | the organization of the beats into regular units |
suspension | delaying arrival of main tone |
anticipation | getting to the main tone early |
