MIG troubleshooting
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Travel angle | the angle of the way you are travelling |
Inclination angle | the angle where you place your weld into the joint |
Bird nesting | is high pressure resistance to the movement of the wire through the conduit liner and contact tube |
Arc hunting | wire feed becomes erratic and an unstable arc develops. A cause of this could be a worn or dirty contact tip |
Worm tracking (porosity) | Seen in FCAW, cause from moisture trapped in the weld and the wire not preheated enough. |
How can you fix worm tracking? | Extend arc length, raise volume of gas, preheat material if possible and switch to straight C02 |
causes of undercut | Incorrect electrode angle, excessive current, travel speed too fast, not stopping long enough on the edges of weave bead. |
What direction of travel do you use when welding FCAW? | FCAW must be performed backhand due to slag: ‘when there’s slag, you drag’ |
Causes of lack of fusion | Improper manipulation of electrode holder puddle to large welding current too low poor joint preparation. o The major cause of lack of fusion is carrying a large bead with slow travel speed. |
Overlap/cold roll causes | Improper manipulation of electrode holder puddle too large welding current too low poor joint preparation. Common in short circuit transfer mode. o The major cause of cold lap is carrying a large bead with slow travel speed. |
