Ch 1:Paleolithic Era

TermDefinition
Archaeology the study of human history and prehistory through things people made, used and left behind
Archaeologists studies things, like bones, tools, homes ,etc
Anthropologists studies cultural aspects of human society, like what they ate, wore, and their languages.
Great Migration a time of vast movement and long-distance travel for humans. Started in Africa and took a million years for people to reach every continent
Ice Age most recent glacial period, which much of the earth was covered by ice and oceans were frozen over. Lasted about 100,000 years.
Opposable moveable. Thumbs that can touch other figures on same hand
Prehistory history before written records
Paleolithic Era The Old Stone Age in which the first humans lived. ~2,500,000 B.C.E to around 10,000 B.C.E.
Nomads a person who has no permanent home and travels to find food.
Petroglyph a carving or inscription on a rock
Hominids first human-like creatures. Could walk upright and had opposable thumbs
Australopithecus means southern apes, from eastern or southern Africa. Could walk on two legs but had a small brain and did not use tools. Lucy
Homo Habilis means able man. Short hominid that lived in east africa and had a larger brain. First to use stone tools
Homo Erectus means upright man. walked upright, longer legs and arms, learned to make fire which allowed them to leave Africa.
Homo Sapiens means wise man. Made tools from stones to use for hunting and farming. Had large brains and small jaws. Close to what we looked today
Neanderthals Type of Homo Sapien that lived in Europe. Large brains but heavier builds and moved slowly.
Homo Sapiens Sapiens means wise wise man, includes today's humans. First appeared in Africa and moved slowly throughout the world.
