TermDefinition
Bully Pulpit View that a major power of the presidency, not one prescribed by the Constitution is to draw attention to & generate support for certain positions.
Cabinet Formal body of presidential advisers who head the 15 executive departments. Presidents often add others to this body of formal advisors.
Executive Agreements Formal international agreements entered into by the president that don't require the advice & consent of the Senate.
Executive Order Rule or regulation issued by the president that has the effect of law. All executive orders must be published in the Federal Register.
Executive Privilege Implied presidential power that gives the president to refuse to disclose information regarding confidential conversations or national security to Congress or the judiciary.
Office of Management and Budget Office that prepares the president's annual budget proposal, reviews the budget & programs of the executive departments, supplies economic, & conducts detailed analyses of proposed bills & agency rules.
Pardon An executive grant providing restoration of all rights & privileges of citizenship to a specific individual charged with or convicted with a crime.
Signing Statements Occasional written comments attached to a bill signed by the president.
25th Amendment Established procedures for filing in vacancies in the office of president & vice president as well as providing for procedures to deal w/ disability of a president.
22nd Amendment Prevents presidents serving more than 2 terms or more than 10 yrs if they came into office by death, resignation, or removal of their predecessor.
US v. Nixon Supreme Court ruling on power of the president, holding that no absolute constitutional executive privilege gives a president to refuse to comply with a court order to make information needed in a criminal trial.
