3 Branches

TermDefinition
Checks and Balances used to keep the government from getting too powerful in one branch
Impeachment A tool the legislative branch has to remove the president or a Supreme Court justice, or judge.
Separation of Powers Each branch of government has its own job
Congress The House of Representatives and the Senate together are called this.
Supreme Court A part of the Judicial branch that is made up of nine justices appointed by the president and approved by Congress.
Senate Made up of 100 elected senators. Part of the Legislative Branch.
US Constitution The document that established the 3 US branches of government.
House of Representatives the lower house of Congress, consisting of a different number of representatives from each state, depending on population
Cabinet Advises the president. The members are approved by the Legislative Branch.
Commander in Chief The title the president has over the Department of Defense, the military.
veto A president can do this to a bill if he does not want it to become a law.
President This person has to be 35 years old, a natural
Senator Each term is 6 years
House of Representative member Each term is 2 years
Legislative Branch the branch of government that makes the laws
Executive Branch Enforces laws
Judicial Branch the branch of government that interprets laws
Speaker of the House the leader of the majority party who serves as the presiding officer of the House of Representatives
Vice President Leader of the Senate
Treaty a formal agreement between the governments of two or more countries
Ratify to approve
bill a proposed law
Census the official count of a population
Rule of Law No one is above the law
Chief Legislator The role of the president in influencing the making of laws in Congress.
Chief Diplomat The role of the president in recognizing foreign governments, making treaties, and effecting executive agreements.
Job of Senate Approve actions and appointments of the:President,Treaties,Judges,Ambassadors,Presidential cabinet, and try impeachments
Department of Justice Federal department responsible for enforcing federal laws (includes FBI, Civil Rights Division, Antitrust Division, Drug Enforcement Administration...)
State Department department that handles relations with other nations
Administrative Agency to make sure regulations are followed by the rest of the country
Marbury v. Madison lets the courts say that Congress or the President is doing something unconstitutional
Code of Hammurabi and Magna Carta Influences on American Law
Judicial Review lets the courts review cases of previous courts
Appeals Court examines the decision of the previous court
