What is a normal heart rate (pulse rate) in a healthy adult at rest? 60-100 beats per min (bpm)
How would you estimate the maximum heart rate for a healthy individual? 220-age
If someone is exercising in a pool or another spot where monitoring vital signs is not possible, what scale would be appropriate to use Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE)
What is the gold standard for measuring cardiovascular fitness in a healthy individual? VO2 max
For healthy individuals, how many times per week should they work out at a moderate to vigorous pace? 3-5x/week per ACSM guidelines
For a child, what location on the body is best for assessing pulse? Brachial artery (medial aspect of the humerus)
For an adult, what location on the body is best for assessing pulse? Radial or Carotid artery
What is the bottom number of the blood pressure called? Diastolic
What is the name of the artery that you can assess pulse on the TOP of the foot? Dorsalis Pedis
If a person has labored breathing for a prolonged time, what muscles will be used to assist with breathing? Accessory muscles (CSM, Scalene, Intercostals, etc)
If a patient/client arrives with a resting blood pressure of 170/110, what is the best course of action for the PT? Contact the physician, report the findings, and solicit recommendations for patient/client.
If a patient/client arrives with a resting blood pressure of 170/110, which number (170 or 110) would be responsible for termination of an exercise session. The diastolic pressure (110) would indicate a red flag. The diastolic pressure should not exceed 100 or have a change of > 10 mm Hg with exercise.
