Overview of Chapter 7

TermDefinition
Descriptive Representation -Idea that elected body should mirror the population it represents - The idea that the elected officials will represent the interests of their own sex, race or socio-economic group
Substantive Representation The tendency of elected officials to support an agenda based on their own personal political party
Standing Committee - Permanent - Has legislative power to mark up a bill
Joint Committee - Permanent - Lack of Legislative power - Party coordinates legislation between the 2 houses
Select/Special Committee - Temporary, only lasts about 1-2 years of a congressional term - Lack of legislative power - Investigates topics not related to the jurisdiction of the standing committees
