Constitution Part 1

TermDefinition
constitution A document which presents a plan of government for a group of people. It states the rules under which a government will operate.
Federalism A system of government where power is distributed between the national (federal) and state governments.
Separation of Powers The Constitution divides the government into three branches and each has its own duties.
Checks and Balances The system set up in the Constitution where each branch of the government has some authority over the other branches.
Legislative Branch (Congress) is responsible for making laws.
Executive Branch (President) responsible for enforcing the laws
Judicial Branch (Supreme Court) responsible for interpreting the laws.
Amendment An alteration or written change to a document.
Bill A proposal for a new law.
Veto When the president refuses to sign off on a bill passed by the Legislative Branch.
Override Congress’s ability to reverse a presidential veto and make the bill a law.
Judicial Review the ability of the Supreme Court to rule on the constitutionality of a law or decide if the law follows the Constitution.
Impeach To vote to bring charges of serious crimes against an elected official in an attempt to remove them from office.
