Harmony
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Harmony | The way chords are constructed and how they follow each other (combinations of three or more tones at once) |
Interrupted cadence | Sounds like the music is going to finish properly but then they throw in a minor key |
Diatonic | Fits in the key; perfect |
Perfect cadence | As if the music has been completed properly |
Plagal cadence | A plagal cadence sounds finished |
Imperfect cadence | As if the music is unfinished |
Dissonant/dissonance | When discords and clashing notes are used |
Drone | A note or notes that carry on throughout the music, like bagpipes or in Indian music |
Pedal | A long, low note that carries on under the music. It could also be a series of repeated notes but it must be the same note and it must be LOW. If the same thing happens with a high note it is called an INVERTED PEDAL. |
Cadence | The close or ending of a phrase |
Harmonic | Two notes stacked one on top of the other (sounding simultaneously) |
