Term | Definition |

Direct Democracy | Rule by the people where all citizens participate directly in the actions of government. |
Republic | Citizens elect representatives to run the government for them. |
Representative Democracy | A system that gave power to the people, and did so with elected representatives. |
Enlightenment | A period of time when people developed new ideas about human existence, including peoples’ basic rights and the level of control they should have over their govt. |
Natural Rights | Human beings are born with fundamental, basic rights that include the right to life, liberty, property, and the freedom to find happiness. |
State of Nature | No rules and complete freedom, but no protection from each other. |
Social Contract | Citizens give up some freedom they would have in a state of nature, and in exchange the government protects citizens’ right to life, liberty, and property. |
Consent of the Governed | If a government fails, citizens no longer agree to be governed and they have the right to revolt. |
Republicanism | The idea that a country’s leader should be chosen by the citizens in a general election. |
Tabula Rasa | A blank slate or page. |
Sovereign | A single ruler with total authority over the people. |
Separation of Powers | The government is divided into equal parts, and each part has its own purpose. |
Checks and Balances | Each branch of government has the ability to limit the power of the other two branches. |
Rule of Law | The idea that all people must follow the laws, and that the laws are enforced fairly. |
Self-Government | People can make decisions on how their government should work. |
Due Process | People have the right to fair and reasonable laws. Officials have to follow rules when enforcing laws and treat all people in the same way. |
Limited Government | A government that has been limited in power by a constitution, or written agreement. |
Rights | A set of things that people believe they should be free to do without restrictions. |
Confederacy | A group of people, countries, or organizations joined together for a common purpose or with a common interest. |
Federalism | A system of government in which power is shared by a larger (central government) and smaller/individual (state) governments. |
