Exteroceptors | Somatic sense receptor located on the body surface |
Visceroceptors (interoceptors) | Somatic sense receptor located in the internal visceral organs |
Proprioceptors | Receptor located in the muscles, tendons, and joints; allows the body to perceive its position relative to surroundings |
Diabetic neuropathy | Retinal damage caused by diabetes mellitus |
Visceral pain | Pain emanating from the internal thoracic, pelvic, or abdominal organs |
Somatic pain | Sharp “take your breath away” type of pain associated with superficial injury or trauma; also called fast pain |
Olfactory | Relating to the sense of smell |
Anosmia | The inability to smell |
Equilibrium | A balance between opposing elements |
Otoliths | Tiny “ear stones” composed of protein and calcium carbonate |
