Ch3 Vehicle Cons1-20
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Certified crash tests | are done using a real vehicle and sensor |
crush zones | are built into the frame or body to collapse and absorb some of the energy of a collision. |
vehicle classification | relates to the construction, size, shape, number of doors, type of roof, and other criteria of a motor vehicle |
Body over frame | vehicles have separate body and chassis parts bolted to the frame |
frame rails | long steel members that extend along the sides of the vehicle |
torque boxes | are the structural parts of the frame designed to allow some twisting to absorb road shock and collision impact. |
frame horn | is at the very front of the frame rails where the bumper attaches. |
crossmembers | are thick metal stampings that extend sideways across the frame rails |
spring hangers | are sometimes formed on the frame to hold the suspension system springs |
rubber body insulators | are used between the frame and body to reduce noise and vibration. |
frame | is an independent, separate part because it is not welded to any of the major units of the body shell |
perimeter frame | has the frame rail near the outside, or perimeter, of the vehicle |
ladder frame | has long frame rails with a series of straight crossmembers formed in several locations. |
partial frame | is a cross between a solid frame and a unibody |
Sub frame assemblies | are used at the front and rear while the unibody supports the middle area of the vehicle |
stressed hull structure | The egg shell concept, all the force applied by your finger is not concentrated in one place but is dispersed over the shell surface |
space frame | vehicle has a metal body structure covered with an outer skin of plastic or composite panels. |
support members | are often bolted to the bottom of the unibody to hold the engine, transmission, and suspension in alignment. |
stationary parts | like the floor, roof, and quarter panels, are permanently welded or adhesive bonded into place. |
hinged parts | like doors, hood, and deck lids, will swing up and open. |
