Imperialism

TermDefinition
Annex Annex Annex (Annexed or Annexation) To add land to a country’s territory.
Colonization When one country takes over and completely controls another area of the world in order to get resources.
Colony An area controlled by another more powerful country.
Economy Having to do with money, trade, or work of a country.
Gunboat Diplomacy When a more powerful country forces trade with a weaker country through military threats.
Hawaii Country that was taken over by sugar planters supported by the U.S. It eventually was added as a state
Imperialism When a stronger country takes over or controls a weaker country.
Latin America Areas of the Americas that used to be controlled by Spain. (South America, the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico)
Monroe Doctrine A U.S. law that forbids European countries from interfering with governments in Latin America.
Panama Canal A waterway the U.S. built and controlled through the country of Panama to shorten trade routes.
Platt Amendment An addition to the treaty that ended the Spanish American War that allowed the U.S. to interfere in the Cuban government whenever it needed to.
Protectorate a smaller, weaker, or less developed country or territory under the protection and partial control of a larger or stronger one.
Pulitzer and Hearst Newspaper owners who published exaggerated and false news stories to sell more papers, but also helped to start the Spanish American War.
Roosevelt Corollary A U.S. law that said the U.S. would take military actions against any European country that interfered with the government of a Latin American country.
Rough Rider A volunteer cavalry regiment (soldiers on horseback) organized by Theodore Roosevelt during the Spanish-American War.
Spanish American War A war between Spain and The U.S. which caused the U.S. to gain control over Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam.
Teller Amendment A declaration that the U.S. did not want to permanently control Cuba during the Spanish American War.
Territory An area of land controlled by another country that is not yet a part of that country.
Treaty of Paris This ended the Spanish American War and gave the U.S. control of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
U.S.S. Maine A U.S. ship that sank in Havana Harbor; Cuba, causing the start of the Spanish American War.
Yellow Journalism Exaggerated and false news stories that were printed to sell more newspapers, but also helped to cause the Spanish American War.
