term | a part of an algebraic expression, a number or variable by itself, or the product of numbers and variables. |
algebraic expression | an expression that contains variables, numbers, operations, and one or more variables |
equivalent expressions | expressions with the same value |
commutative property of multiplication | changing the order of fractions does not change the product |
associative property of multiplication | changing the grouping of factors does not change the product |
like terms | terms of an algebraic expression that have the same variables raised to the same exponents |
commutative property of addition | changing the order of addends does not change the sum |
multiplication property of zero | the product of any number and 0 is 0 |
constant | a term without a variable |
variable | a symbol that represents one or more numbers |
addition property of zero | the sum of any number and 0 is that number |
distributive property | to multiply a sum or difference by a number, multiply each term in the sum or difference by the number outside the parentheses. Then simplify. |
associative property of addition | changing the grouping of addends does not change the sum |
factoring an expression | writing a numerical expression or algebraic expression as a product of factors |
coefficient | the numerical factor of a term that contains a variable |
multiplication property of one | the product of any number and 1 is that number |
