What are counting numbers? | the integers that are positive (they don't include zero) |
What is another name for counting numbers? | natural numbers |
What is the rule of adding positive and negative numbers with the same sign? | add the numbers and keep the sign |
What is the rule of adding positive and negative numbers with different signs? | subtract the positive forms of the numbers and keep the sign of the larger number |
What is the rule of subtracting positive and negative numbers? | subtracting a number is the same as adding its opposite. ex. a - b=a +(-b) |
What is the answer if you multiply/divide a positive number by a positive number?(8 x 6 =) | Positive Number |
What is the answer if you multiply/divide a negative number by a positive number?(-8 x 6 =) | Negative Number |
What is the answer if you multiply/divide a positive number by a negative number?(8 x -6 =) | Negative Number |
What is the answer if you multiply/divide a negative number by a negative number?(-8 x -6 =) | Positive Number |
What is the cummutative property for addition? | a + b = b + a |
What is the cummutative property for multiplication? | a x b = b x a |
What is the associative property for addition? | (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) |
What is the associative property for multiplication? | (a x b)x c = a x(b x c) |
What is the distributive property? | a(b + c) = a x b + a x c = ab + ac |
What is the multiplicative property of 0? | a x 0 = 0 x a = 0 |
What is the multiplicative property of 1? | a x 1 = a |
What is the multiplicative property of -1? | a x (-1) = -a |
What is the additive property of 0? | a + 0 = 0 + a = a |
What is the propoerty of reciprocals for all nonzero numbers? | n x 1/n = 1 |
What is the additive property of opposites? | a + (-a) = -a + a = 0 |
What is an exponent? | a superscript that indicates how many times a number or base is to be multiplied times itself. |
What are the properties of exponents when multiplying? | you add the exponents for numbers with the same base |
What are the properties of exponents when dividing? | you subtract the exponents for numbers with the same base |
What are the properties of exponents when raising a number to a power? | You multiply the exponents when raising a number to a power |
What are the order of operations? | parenthesis (P), exponents (E), multiplication (M), division (D), Addition (A), subtraction (S) going left to right |
What is the greatest common factor (GCF)? | for two or more numbers it is the largest number that divides into those numbers without leaving a remainder |
What is the least common multiple (LCM)? | the smallest number two or more numbers will divide into evenly |
What is a rational number? | any number that can be expressed as a/b where a and b are integers, b ≠ 0 or a rational number can always be expressed as a fraction |

What is the median? | the middle value of a set of data |
How do you find the median? | arrange the data in order from lowest to highest and take the middle value. If there is no middle value, the median is the average of the middle two values |
What is the mode? | in a set of data it is the number that occurs most often |
What is the range? | in a set of data it is the difference between the highest and lowest numbers in the set |
What is a variable? | a symbol or letter that can stand for any number or a set of numbers (x + 4, x is the variable)? |
What is a coefficient? | the number that multiplies a variable (7x, 7 is t |
