Basic Rules and Definitions for 6th-8th Grades

What are real numbers? numbers found on a number line
What are integers? numbers that do not have decimals or fractions
What are whole numbers? integers (including zero) that are non-negative
What are counting numbers? the integers that are positive (they don't include zero)
What is another name for counting numbers? natural numbers
What is the rule of adding positive and negative numbers with the same sign? add the numbers and keep the sign
What is the rule of adding positive and negative numbers with different signs? subtract the positive forms of the numbers and keep the sign of the larger number
What is the rule of subtracting positive and negative numbers? subtracting a number is the same as adding its opposite. ex. a - b=a +(-b)
What is the answer if you multiply/divide a positive number by a positive number?(8 x 6 =) Positive Number
What is the answer if you multiply/divide a negative number by a positive number?(-8 x 6 =) Negative Number

What is the multiplicative property of 0? a x 0 = 0 x a = 0

What is the additive property of 0? a + 0 = 0 + a = a
What is the propoerty of reciprocals for all nonzero numbers? n x 1/n = 1
What is the additive property of opposites? a + (-a) = -a + a = 0
What is an exponent? a superscript that indicates how many times a number or base is to be multiplied times itself.
What are the properties of exponents when multiplying? you add the exponents for numbers with the same base
What are the properties of exponents when dividing? you subtract the exponents for numbers with the same base
What are the properties of exponents when raising a number to a power? You multiply the exponents when raising a number to a power
What are the order of operations? parenthesis (P), exponents (E), multiplication (M), division (D), Addition (A), subtraction (S) going left to right
What is the greatest common factor (GCF)? for two or more numbers it is the largest number that divides into those numbers without leaving a remainder
What is the least common multiple (LCM)? the smallest number two or more numbers will divide into evenly
What is a rational number? any number that can be expressed as a/b where a and b are integers, b ≠ 0 or a rational number can always be expressed as a fraction
What are the two types of fractions? proper and improper
What is a proper fraction? the numerator is less than the denominator
What is a improper fraction? the numerator is greater than the denominator
How do you compute an average? add all of the data and divide by the number of pieces of data
What is the median? the middle value of a set of data
How do you find the median? arrange the data in order from lowest to highest and take the middle value. If there is no middle value, the median is the average of the middle two values
What is the mode? in a set of data it is the number that occurs most often
What is the range? in a set of data it is the difference between the highest and lowest numbers in the set
What is a variable? a symbol or letter that can stand for any number or a set of numbers (x + 4, x is the variable)?
What is a coefficient? the number that multiplies a variable (7x, 7 is t
