CH8 Skin Disorders
| Term | Definition |

| Bulla | A large blister containing a watery fluid |
| Macule | A flat spot or discoloration on the skin |
| Lesion | A freckle or a mark on the skin |
| Papule | A small elevation on the skin that contains no fluid, but may develop pus |
| Pustule | Forms from a papule when dead white blood cells accumulate in it. |
| Tumor | An abnormal cell mass that varies in size, color, and shape. |
| Wheal | An itchy, swollen lesion that can be caused by a number of factors and usually resolves by itself. |
| Secondary Skin Lesions | Lesions of the skin characterized by piles of material or a depression on the skin surface |
| Crust | Dead cells that form over a wound or blemish while it is healing is compromised |
| Excoriation | Refers to a skin sore or abrasion produced by scratching or scraping |
| Fissures | Cracks in the skin that penetrate the dermis layer, such as chapped hands or lips. |
| Keloid | An excessive thick scar resulting from overgrowth of fibrous tissue. |
| Scale | Any thin dry or oily plate of epidermal flakes |
| Ulcer | An open lesion of the skin or mucous membrane, accompanied by pus and characterized by loss of skin depth. |
| Comedo | A hair follicle filled with keratin and sebum |
| Closed comedo | A whitehead |
| Milia | Keratin filled cyst that are usually associated with newborns and are commonly found around eyes, cheeks, and forehead and have no visible openings. |
| Acne | A skin disorder characterized by chronic inflammation of the sebaceous glands cause from retained secretions. |
| Sebaceous cyst | A large protruding pocket-like lesion filled with sebum |
| Seborreheic dermatitis | Inflammation of the sebaceous glands characterized by redness, dry, or oily scaling, crusting, and or itchiness |
| Telangiectasias | Distended or dilated surface blood vessels, and ingestion of spicy foods can aggravate rosacea |
| Hyperhidrosis | Excessive sweating, caused by heat or general body weakness. |
| Conjunctivitis | Is a common infection of the eye. |
| Herpes Simplex | A contagious, recurring viral infection characterized by fever blisters or cold sores. |
| Psoriasis | A noncontagious skin disease characterized by red patches covered with a silver-white scales found on the scalp elbows, knees, chest and lower back |
| Albinism | Congenital hypopigmentation, or absence of melanin pigment of the body, including the skin, hair, and eyes. |
| Leukoderma | A skin disorder characterized by abnormal light patches. |
| Stain | Refers to an abnormal brown or wine-colored skin discoloration with circular or irregular shape. |
| Skin tag | A small brown or flesh-colored outgrowth of the skin |
| Verruca | Hypertrophy of the papillae and epidermis. |
| Basal Cell Carcinoma | The most common and least severe type of skin cancer |
| Squamous Cell Carcinoma | A type of skin cancer that is often characterized by scaly red papules or nodules |
| Malignant Melanoma | Dark brown patches on the skin that may appear uneven in texture, jagged, or raised |
| Borders | The American Cancer Society recommends using a checklist to recognize potential skin cancer or changes in moles, using the letter B to check mole_____. |
| Fatty acids | The main food source for acne bacteria |
| Sun Exposure | An example of an Extrinsic skin-aging factor (cause by 80-85) |
| UVB Rays | Burning rays that cause sun burns and tanning |
| UVA Rays | Aging rays that weaken collagen and elastin of the skin |
| Sensitization | Is an allergic reaction created by repeated exposure to a chemical or a substance. |
