refugee | someone who is forced to leave their country to escape danger |
stock | a share of ownership in a company |
depression | a period of low economic activity & high unemployment |
The Great Depression | a serve of global economic downturn that affected many countries across the world. it started with a sharp decline un stock prices in the U.S and lasted for 10 years |
pensions | grant money paid to people who have retired |
Centennial | the festival in 1936 marking 100 years since Texas declared it's freedom from Mexico |
ensure | to make something certain or secure |
expansion | the action of becoming larger or more extensive |
radical | departing from tradition; innovative |
diverse | showing a great deal of variety |
the dust bowl | was the result of a period of severe dust storms that greatly damaged the agriculture of the american prairies during the 1930's |
erosion | the gradual wearing away of something such as soil |
foreclosure | the action of the bank taking back ownership of a property because the mortgagor fails to be able to make payments |
tenant farmers | a person who rents a plot of land from its owner and pays for its use with a share of the crop |
boom-the-bust cycle | a prolonged period great profits followed by a sharp decline |
decline | a recession in businesses income that typically occurs when the costumer are spending less |
topsoil | the part of the soil where most plants have their roots |
Hooverville | derisive name for the name of the camps made of cardbored where the homeless lives during the great depression. named after the president at the time, herbert hoover |
new deal | a series of programs, public work projects, financial reforms, and regulations enacted by FDR in order to get out of the great depression |
lobbyist | a person who takes part in an organized attempt to influence legislators |
herbert hoover | the 31st president of the U.S and was president when the great depression happened |
franklin D. Roosevelt | the 32nd president of the U.S. commonly known as FDR he was the ONLY president to serve more than 2 terms |
dictator | a ruler who has complete power over a country |
fascism | a system in witch the government has complete control power a country |
empire | groups of countries united under the power of a single ruler |
alien | foreign-born resident of a country who have not yet become citizens |
internment | confinement, especially during war time |
